The year studied shows a 9.1% rise over the previous year for people permanently moving to Australia

As we are constantly scouring the Internet for useful tips, information and resources for people moving to Australia, the results of my searches never ceases to amaze me and today was no exception. I came across some moving to Australia statistics that, as usual, made me take notice.

“16 Interesting Statistics About Moving To Australia” is a list I discovered posted by Scott King at http://www.traveleverywhere.net/ (a fantastic travel tips and information site by the way) with some real eye opening nuggets. Among the moving to Australia statistical highlights for the 2008-2009 financial year:

#1) 224,619 people permanently moved to Australia. This was a 9.1% rise over the previous 12 month period, showing an almost continuous year on year rise.

#4) 182 people entered Australia under the title of having a ‘Distinguished Talent’. According to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, this is for “people who are internationally recognized for exceptional and outstanding achievement in a profession, the arts, sport or research or academia.”

#6) In respect of age, more women aged between 25 and 34 moved to Australia than any other age or sex, with 36,947.

#11) The United Kingdom has appeared in the top 2 countries in which immigrants arrive from since 1978.

Make sure to click through to the page to see the whole list. However, one of the most shocking things to me is how many of these moving to Australia statistics and information pages continue to propagate the web. A key reason for this can also be seen on the page in their introduction. As they state:

“Seen by many as one of the most popular places on earth, several of Australia’s cities often rank on annual surveys of the best places to live in the world. With hundreds of thousands of people deciding to move to Australia (whether permanently or temporarily) each and every year, the country is expected to have a population of 36 million by 2050, according to The Australian newspaper.”

Moving to Australia continues to increase in popularity and, as the list mentions, shows no sign of slowing down anytime in the coming decades. The statistics found online back this up and we will keep pointing you towards the most interesting ones as they become available.

As time continues to rush by we would like to stop and reassess as our Shipping to Australia blog turns 8 months old this week. As we promised back in August when we began, the blog is meant to be a resource for anyone thinking about shipping and/or moving to Australia, answering questions that anyone may have and hopefully providing guidance from our wealth of experience with making such a life altering move. The blog compliments and supports our web site, www.shipping2australia.com, which also provides a wealth of information on the subject of immigrating to Australia while, more significantly, helping our visitors by doing all the work and finding them the best quote from the top companies when shipping to, from or within Australia.

We mentioned in our opening post how we would like the most important aspect of the blog to be you, the visitor, and have spent the last several weeks going over the batches of feedback that have come in to the blog over the course of the last half year. The general consensus has been that, not surprisingly, the most coveted service by our readers has been finding those low shipping quotes while they have also searched for some more practical advice from our experts.

In response to these requests, we will be starting a new series this week tackling a different aspect of shipping and/or moving to Australia with each post. We will provide our usual expert information and advice on each subject while also pointing you towards other leading resources throughout the web and will help explain how www.shipping2australia.com can directly help you with each and every single one of the shipping issues we raise.

We look forward to you tuning in throughout the series and ask that you keep the input (questions, advice, critiques, etc.) coming to continue to make us the leading shipping and moving to Australia blog and website on the Internet.

During the 2001 election in Australia, asylum-seekers wishing to move to Australia became a big issue.

As a result of global terror incidents such as September 11, the Tampa affair, Children overboard affair, and the sinking of the SIEV-X, the issue of asylum seekers looking to move to Australia was brought to the forefront. This resulted in the beginning of the controversial Pacific Solution, where asylum seekers moving to Australia were then sent on to remote Pacific islands.

The Howard government’s success in getting elected was largely due to the strong public support for its tough policy on asylum-seekers. Even so, the overall level of immigration to Australia increased siginificantly during the Howard Government.

In February 2009, for the first time in eight years, Australia cut its annual immigration levels due to the bad economy and weak demand for skilled labor. This is having a dramatic affect on an entire industry sector based on immigration to Australia. With fewer visas being issued, businesses which have been making their profits by helping people to move to Australia are seeing their numbers drop. And this is causing the same effect in other industries such as housing, car rentals and shipping.

Immigration Minister Chris Evans said “It is fair to say that we expect the demand in the economy for labor to reduce. As it (The Permanent Migration Program) is a program very much linked to the demand for labor, we expect to run a smaller program.”

In March 2009 the Government reduced the year’s immigration target by 14%. Meanwhile, the Permanent Migration Program for skilled migrants was slashed to 115,000 people. All this translates into a sharp drop in service prices most used by immigrants. For example, since there is less of a need for shipping to Australia, many companies are cutting prices to try to attract more business.

Good news for new immigrants who are already shipping to Australia their belongings. Jobs in Australia are fairly easy to find! New migrants are finding employment faster than ever before according to a new survey conducted by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA).

The latest longitudinal survey of new migrants moving to Australia shows that a greater number of principal applicants who entered Australia via the Skilled-Independent, Family, and Business and Employer Sponsored categories in 2003-04 found employment within six months of arriving in Oz compared to those who arrived in either 1993-94 or 1999-2000.
Business and Employer sponsored migrants were the most successful at finding work, with 93 percent of those who arrived through this category being employed within half a year of shipping to Australia their items. Meanwhile, 82 percent of Skilled-independent migrants were working within six months of settling Down Under, as were 65 percent of family migrants.

“It is critical that we attract migrants who are willing and able to enter the labour force quickly, to ensure they are helping build Australia’s economy,” said immigration minister Senator Amanda Vanstone. “This research indicates that we are heading in the right direction.”

Foreigners in Relationship with Australians Can Stay While Application Considered

Are you a foreign national in a relationship with an Australian citizen? Good news! You no longer need to leave the country while your request for a visa for Australia is being considered.

Previously the law required a foreign partner applying for an Australian partner visa to go offshore while awaiting a decision from the Australian Immigration department. Now, couples no longer face a separation and the foreign partner is permitted to remain in the country while their application for an Australian visa is considered. Those applying for the Australian partner visa will need a sponsorship form signed by their partner and supporting statutory declarations from two other Australians.

The changes will not apply to people who have previously been refused a partner visa since their last entry into Australia, or who have had an Australian visa cancelled or refused on character grounds.

Chris Evans, a spokesman for Immigration Minister said the old practice was forcing Australians to face a potentially long separation from their foreign partners. Figures show that up to 30 per cent of all cases presented to the minister for intervention involved people in that situation.

While immigration experts have welcomed the change but say the changes need to go further and also apply to those who have family in Australia but not a partner.
