History of Immigration to Australia: The White Australia Policy

Today moving to Australia is an viable option for people all around the globe, but that was not always the case. Unfortunately, at one time racism affected the policies governing  immigration to Australia.

The ‘White Australia‘ policy was the government’s original approach to immigration to Australia. Until the latter part of the 20th century, Australia favored applicants from certain countries, most often ones with predominantly white populations.

Only in 1949, did the minister of immigration Harold Holt allow non-European refugees to remain in Australia and for Japanese war brides to enter. And even then a limit was set at only 800 immigrants.

Over the next 25 years, the Australian government gradually dismantled the policy, with the final vestiges being removed in 1973.
