As a result of global terror incidents such as September 11, the Tampa affair, Children overboard affair, and the sinking of the SIEV-X, the issue of asylum seekers looking to move to Australia was brought to the forefront. This resulted in the beginning of the controversial Pacific Solution, where asylum seekers moving to Australia were then sent on to remote Pacific islands.

The Howard government’s success in getting elected was largely due to the strong public support for its tough policy on asylum-seekers. Even so, the overall level of immigration to Australia increased siginificantly during the Howard Government.
